ROT13 ("rotate by 13 places") is a classic substitution cipher that replaces a letter with the 13th letter after it in the alphabet. It is a special case of the Caesar cipher, developed in ancient Rome. Because the English alphabet contains 26 letters (2 * 13 = 26), the ROT13 algorithm is its own inverse. Applying the transformation twice yields the original plaintext:

For any given character $c$ in a string, the transformation can be expressed modularly. Treating 'a' (or 'A') as index 0:
- **Lowercase Letters ($a-z$):** $c' = (c - 97 + 13) \pmod{26} + 97$ - **Uppercase Letters ($A-Z$):** $c' = (c - 65 + 13) \pmod{26} + 65$ - **Non-alphabetic characters:** Unmodified (digits, punctuation, whitespace remain intact).

Is ROT13 considered a secure encryption method?
No. ROT13 is an obfuscation technique, not encryption. It uses a fixed shift of 13 without a secure key. Anyone can instantly decrypt ROT13-encoded text by applying the algorithm a second time or using a decoder tool. Never use it for sensitive data.
Why does applying ROT13 twice return the original text?
The English alphabet has 26 letters. Since ROT13 shifts characters by 13 positions, applying it twice results in a total shift of 26 positions (13 + 13). This loops the alphabet completely back to the original starting characters.
Does ROT13 affect numbers and special characters?
No. Standard implementations of ROT13 only transform the 26 letters of the basic Latin alphabet (A–Z and a–z). Numbers, punctuation marks, whitespace, and Unicode symbols pass through the cipher completely unmodified.
